Week 36 - normal + paraphrase 4:1-6 + FF Bruce!

Let's paraphrase this small interesting section (4:1-6) this time, and it actually goes well with the beginning intro notes from FF Bruce's book on John's Epistles. FF Bruce is possibly my favorite nerd-study teacher when it gets to the nerdiest of things. With his brethren background and ultimate scholarship he ties in belief and revelation in the Scriptures along with the study of those details of background, language, archeology, etc. that most associate with spiritual death. This man handled the most difficult aspects of study and became the teacher of modern times to all of the other teachers. Every book I've caught of his has been great. Some of them, like his books on the Dead Sea Scrolls, are great if you need something to put you to sleep at night 🙂 But others, like his book on difficult questions, are ones you don't want to stop reading. For more on him go to this kind of official site: https://www.ffbruce.com. If you can't tell, I normally like to read older books and rarely find the great things of God in current books. I appreciate current books and the help they are to the church. But most of them aren't offering something that you haven't gained from a better older book. I like to go to the books that the book writers went to in order to get helped basically. But FF Bruce is different. He is modern but he added a lot to the church's library of treasures.

He passed away in 1990 so his writings should still be in copyright. The link here goes to the eBook which is well done. That same publisher (the one from the main FFBruce site) just hasn't released the paperback version yet. If you need a physical book I'd recommend getting a used one since the "new" ones on Amazon are not well done and probably shouldn't be there.

You can read part of the eBook for free if you want to check it out first. We may have a few who feel they can't afford the eBook. If that's the case, send me a message so I can get it for you. If you'll read it I'd love to buy you a copy.

We've handled some verse by verse commentaries. With this one, at least read the background talks at the beginning. We haven't really focused on that since we've been so studying the verses. To me, he seems to be the best with background notes - he was no lazy student of the bible or its background, and he brings complex boring information into a simple logical teaching.

The mystery of Israel: a conversation about prophecies and modern events

This is not a message, it is more of a discussion that I’ve been having with several people by phone call or email or chat or in person. This only includes some notes on it but I wanted to share a more comprehensive view all at once.

How do I prepare to share a 5-minute message?

I just received a question via text from a brother who is about to share a short word at an upcoming event. He wanted to know how I prepare when I'm sharing a word. There are many more details to talk about, but for those 5-minute times, here are my notes: 1) Pray for the people  The "burden of the word" (Mal 1:1) or the specific main word I get often comes through this. If I have no clue what to share on and I'm asking the Lord about it, the answer doesn't always come until I begin to pray for the people. More often than not, I'll be praying for the souls, and some Scripture or topic will come through that. Sometimes I already have the word, and I cannot tell when it came, but I know what I should share on. In your case, you may have a word already in your heart that has worked in you to get you to this point. Even still, you take the word and bring it to the Lord and pray for the people that will be listening. 2) Meditate and receive the word The largest par...
